Having a cold might increase the volume of a snore, but it's not the major culprit, the soft pallet plays a major role too. People who snore  louder have a bigger soft pallet than those who do not snore.  The bigger pallet obstructs the smooth breathing. The turbulent and rough airflow creates the snoring sound. A big soft pallet starts to act up during the sleep, while at daytime you don't notice anything.

Obesity and old age only make the complaints worse, and you should avoid drinking alcohol as well as spending time in smoky environments.

An estimated three out of ten women, and four out of ten men snore. Surgery is an option, but is seen as a final measure. Little aids such as plastic splints that help keep open your airways. Earplugs for the partner are of course a possible solution too.

As a result of loud snores from one of the partners, a lot of couples sleep separately in sound-proof rooms. If it's just an occasional snore someone might be referred to the couch. But this certainly isn't one of the better solutions. After a night on the couch people wake up totally exhausted realizing the value of a good night's sleep in a decent bed.
