Causes of sleeping problems
Sleeping problems can have different causes. Very often the
night's rest is disturbed by a combination of factors working together:
- External influences: sunlight, a noisy environment, snoring, the partner, the temperature in
the bedroom, working shifts, change of time (jet lag, daylight saving time...), different
environment, an uncomfortable bed, ...
- all kinds of habits we have gotten use to: not enough exercise, lack of relaxation during the
day, changing bedtimes, too much drinks before bedtime such as alcohol, coffee, tea, coke, ... a
stomach that's too full or too empty,...
- Physical factors: itches, allergies, breathing difficulties, pain (e.g. back, joints, stomach,
head aches, ...) fever, urinal problems,...
- All types of anxiety, tension and worries regarding difficult situations or events that seem
hopeless e.g. a death, fatal illness, financial difficulties, conflict situations with a partner or
the children, problems at work...
- Fear of getting out of bed and not being able to go to sleep again...
- Use of certain sedatives e.g. tranquillizers, some painkillers, uplifting substances,...
