Deep sleep is especially described as being beneficial to the physical consequences of the things we do when we are awake, and provides a good metabolism.

The dream sleep is said to play an important role in keeping the emotions balanced. Dreams are mostly present during the REM sleep phase, which is why they are also called dream sleep or paradoxical sleep. They are called paradoxical because the brain activity is largest then, while the muscles are pretty much paralysed. The REM period lasts about 10 minutes but the phases grow longer gradually throughout the sleep. After each REM sleep phase there is usually a short moment of being awake.
